Ruling on one who broke her fast for an excuse, then grew old and is unable to make up the fasts

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
The listening sister (S. A. H.) from Jeddah sent a message saying: To the honor of our father, Shaykh Abdul Aziz ibn Abdullah ibn Baz (may Allah preserve him) as a storehouse for Islam and the Muslims, after the introduction:
Peace be upon you, and Allah’s mercy and blessings. I am confused about my situation, O Shaykh! The problem is that my mother recently told me that in the past she did not make up the days of menstruation and post-natal bleeding, and this was due to her ignorance of the ruling. She is now old and unable to make up this long period. She is also suffering from diabetes and high blood pressure, and she is now confused about her situation as well. Does charity suffice for this? And what is the amount? Please give us a ruling, may Allah reward you with good.

Answer:
First: She must repent to Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) for what she did by leaving it. The reality of repentance consists of three things:
Regret for the past sin.
And not doing it again.
And the sincere resolve that the servant will not return to it.
This repentance consists of regret for the past, abandoning the sin, and leaving it off out of fear of Allah and reverence for Him, and a third requirement, which is the sincere resolve not to return to the sin.
So the mother you asked about, O questioner, may Allah reward you with good, she must repent to Allah with sincere regret for what has passed. Along with that, she must feed one poor person for every day, as long as she is unable to make up the fasts. She must feed one poor person for every day, if she is able. If she has financial capability, she must feed one poor person for every day half a sa' (a dry measure of about 3 kg), by the sa' of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), which is approximately one and a half kilograms, of the staple food of the country: rice, or dates, or wheat, or barley, or the like.
This is what is obligatory upon her, along with repentance and seeking forgiveness for what has passed. And Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) accepts the repentance of those who repent. And you, may Allah reward you with good, help her with this good if she is unable to perform part of the expiation and you are able, then help her
And Allah is engaged in helping the worshipper as long as the worshipper is engaged in helping his brother.والله في عون العبد ما كان العبد في عون أخيه
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1425Sahih (Darussalam)
how much more so the mother. May Allah be our helper.

The presenter: Yes, yes, may Allah reward you with good. Is the rice plain, without anything else with it? Shaykh Abdul Aziz.

The Shaykh: And she must also pay attention to the number of days, even if by estimate, if knowing the exact number is difficult. Even if by estimate, the estimate is sufficient when one is unable to know the exact number of days. And if there is a side dish with the rice or wheat, that is better. And better than that is meat or fat. All of this is good. Otherwise, it is sufficient on its own. Dates alone, rice alone, and wheat alone are sufficient. But if there is a side dish with the rice or the like, it becomes better. Yes.

The presenter: Yes, yes. May Allah reward you with good.
