The ruling on keeping dogs and touching them
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
Our sister appears to be from one of the families afflicted with keeping dogs, so she asks and says: If we touch a dog, and then we want to pray, what is the ruling?
Answer:
If the dog is dry and the hand is dry, there is nothing [to do]; there is nothing required of the one who touched it. However, if the dog is wet, or the hand is wet, let him wash it seven times with water under a tap, washing it seven times. If he puts some earth in that, it is even better, like the case of a dog drinking from a vessel; because the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered the use of earth in the case of a dog drinking from a vessel in one of the seven washings. So if one touches a dog, or touches its saliva, or its urine, he washes it seven times, and there should be earth in it. If soap or detergent is not available, it takes the place of that, and earth is better; because the text came with it.
It is not permissible to keep dogs, and it is not permissible to possess dogs except in three cases: for hunting, for the farm—the farms—and for livestock—the sheep—because of its presence there, it protects them—by the permission of Allah—from wolves, and alerts their owners so that they may watch over them. And the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Riyad as-Salihin 1688 So if you are keeping dogs, beware of that and remove them, and do not keep them ever except for one of the three: for hunting, or for a farm, or for sheep livestock. Yes.
