Do I have dogs that are not trained for hunting? Is it lawful to keep them, and is what they hunt lawful to eat?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : We have dogs that we raise, and they are not of the known hunting dogs. Is what they hunt, meaning when they catch something, lawful or forbidden? And what is the ruling on raising such animals? Please inform us, may Allah reward you with good.

The Shaykh : It is not permissible for a person to keep a dog unless it is a hunting dog, a farm dog, or a livestock dog, as established by the hadith from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). As for these dogs the questioner referred to, if he keeps them to train them for hunting so that they can hunt, then there is no blame on him for that, due to the saying of Allah the Exalted:
and [game caught by] what you have trained of hunting animals which you train as Allah has taught you. So eat of what they catch for you, and mention the name of Allah upon it, and fear Allah." Indeed, Allah is swift in account.
[Al-Ma'idah 5:4]
.
And if he keeps them merely for his hobby of them, then this is forbidden for him and not permissible, and a qirat is deducted from his reward every day.
On this occasion, I would like to point out what many of the wealthy do by keeping dogs in their houses, and perhaps they buy them for exorbitant prices, even though the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade the price of a dog. They do this by imitating non-Muslims. It is well known that imitating non-Muslims in what is forbidden or in what is specific to them is not permissible, due to the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
He who copies any people is one of them. من تشبه بقوم فهو منهم
Sunan Abi Dawud 4031Hasan Sahih (Al-Albani)
. So my advice to these brothers is to fear Allah (Mighty and Majestic), and to preserve their money, and to preserve their rewards and their recompense from being diminished, and to leave these dogs and repent to Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He). And whoever repents, Allah turns to him in mercy.

The questioner : May Allah reward you.
