The Ruling on Calling Upon the Awliya, Consulting Fortune-Tellers, and the Practice of Tawilah

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
The last question we are presenting is from the letter of our brother from Al-Khabar. It concerns the ruling on one who visits the awliya (close friends of Allah) or the sayyids and asks them for his needs, or has a sick person who is possessed by a jinn, knowing that the awliya are slaughtered to for the jinn? What is the ruling on one who is compelled to do so because of possession, i.e., madness? And what is the ruling on one who practices creating love and hatred between spouses?

Answer:
These are serious matters. Visiting the awliya, the righteous, or the prophets in order to call upon them, seek their aid, and make vows to them is major shirk (associating partners with Allah). Likewise, those who are called sayyids, visiting them to seek their aid, or to ask for help and support at their graves, or away from their graves, all of this is abominable. All of this is major shirk. The One to be called upon and the One from whom healing is sought is Allah alone (Glorified and Exalted is He) .
As for going to the sayyids, whether living or dead, to ask them to heal one’s sick person, and believing that they heal the sick, and that they have a secret, or asking them at their graves, or asking them for help and support, or for the healing of the sick, or to enrich the poor, or to restrain the oppressor, or similar matters, this means believing that they have the power to act. This constitutes major kufr (disbelief). This is the practice of the polytheists with al-Lat and al-Uzza. We seek refuge in Allah from that. It is obligatory to be cautious of this and to stay away from it, because it is major shirk.
Likewise, slaughtering for the jinn and drawing near to them with sacrifices is major shirk. Or slaughtering for the owners of graves, such as al-Badawi, al-Husayn, or Ibn ‘Alwan, or Shaykh ‘Abd al-Qadir al-Jilani, or others before or after them, slaughtering for them and drawing near to them so that they may heal one’s sick person, or fulfill one’s need, or ward off oppression from one, or return one’s lost property, or similar matters. All of this is major shirk. Likewise, saying: “Help, help, help, help,” this is major shirk. We ask Allah for safety.
Likewise, asking one who claims to be a fortune-teller about needs is also not permissible. If one believes him in his claim of knowledge of the unseen, it is major shirk. There are those who claim knowledge of the unseen through the stars, observing their movements, conjunctions, and separations. This is called astrology. If one believes him in his claim of knowledge of the unseen, it is major kufr.
Likewise, the fortune-teller who has a vision from the jinn, who has companions among the jinn, and who consults them and asks them questions. If a person believes him, he has disbelieved in what was revealed to Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). Because the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
or who goes to a fortuneteller and believes what he says, he has disbelieved in that which was revealed to Muhammad.من أتى كاهنًا فصدقه بما يقول فقد كفر بما أنزل على محمد
Sunan Ibn Majah 639Hasan (Darussalam)
(peace and blessings be upon him). This means believing him in knowledge of the unseen, because these people claim knowledge of the unseen based on the news they receive from their companions among the jinn. The one who thinks so believes that they have some knowledge of the unseen, and he believes them in what they claim. This is a great danger. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) informed about his companions that they are disbelievers in what was revealed to Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him).
Likewise, one who engages in the causes of affection and love, meaning he engages in things called al-sarf and al-‘utuf, meaning he makes a man love his wife, and a woman love her husband. This is a type of sihr (sorcery) and is called tawilah, as in the hadith:
Indeed, ruqyah (healing by Qur'anic recitation), tawilah, and tamimah (amulets) are shirkإن الرقى والتولة والتمائم شرك
. Tawilah means that a woman or a man does what causes Zayd to hate his wife, or her to hate her husband, through the jinn, calling upon them, seeking their aid, and the like, until they gain control over this man or this woman with things that make her hate her husband or make him hate his wife and be repelled by her. This is one of the ugliest abominations, and it is injustice to the servants. Moreover, it is in itself shirk, because he seeks it through the jinn, calling upon them and seeking their aid. We ask Allah for well-being. It combines shirk and injustice to the servants. We seek refuge in Allah. Yes.

The presenter: May Allah reward you with good.
