The Ruling on Dreams That Encourage Calling Upon the Awliya (Close Friends of Allah) and Slaughter for Them
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
This is a question we received from Syria, from the town of Raqqa, from the sender Hamid Sultan. He says in his message: Often, some women dream that a man came to them and said to them: "Slaughter for Allah and for al-Khidr, or a disease will befall you." They also say that the one who does not slaughter will have his family diminished by death. Please inform us, may Allah reward you?
Answer: This dream and its like are from Shaytan. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said in the authentic hadith: This vision is from Shaytan. If a woman or a man sees such a dream, or sees that he is being beaten or threatened with killing, or is in a frightening place, all of this is from Shaytan. So he should spit to his left when he wakes up; he should spit to his left three times, meaning: he should spit to his left three times with light spittle and say: "I seek refuge in Allah from Shaytan and from the evil of what I saw" three times. Then he should turn over to his other side, and it will not harm him, and he should not tell anyone about it.
Slaughter for Allah is an act of worship at any time. If one slaughters for Allah as an act of worship and gives it in charity, there is no harm. As for slaughter for al-Khidr, this is reprehensible, and it is slaughter for other than Allah, which is not permissible. Allah the Exalted says: [Al-An'am: 162] meaning: My slaughter, [Al-An'am: 162-163]. And Allah the Exalted says: [Al-Kawthar: 1-2]. And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Sahih Muslim 1978b Reported by Muslim in his Sahih from the hadith of 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). So it is not permissible to slaughter for al-Khidr, nor for al-Badawi, nor for al-Husayn, nor for any other person, nor for idols, nor for jinn. Slaughter is for Allah alone. Drawing near is by slaughtering for Allah alone, the Exalted, such as 'udhiyah (sacrifices) and hady (pilgrimage sacrifices). As for al-Khidr, or al-Badawi, or al-Husayn, or ....... or Ibn 'Arabi, or Shaykh 'Abd al-Qadir, or so-and-so... all of this is not permissible to slaughter for at all. So drawing near to them with slaughters so that they intercede for you, or so that your child is healed, all of this is major shirk (associating partners with Allah), we seek refuge in Allah, like slaughtering for idols, jinn, and stars; all of it is major shirk. So one must beware of this or its like. One must advise one another to abandon that and counsel one another. So slaughter is for Allah alone, the Exalted. Likewise, supplication and calling for aid: one does not call for aid to al-Khidr, nor to al-Badawi, nor to al-Husayn, nor to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), nor to anyone else. Calling for aid is to Allah alone. One does not call for aid to the dead, nor to jinn, nor to angels, nor to idols, nor to stars. Rather, Allah alone is called upon, and He alone is called upon for aid, the Exalted. And aid is not sought from the dead, like al-Badawi and others, nor from the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), nor from anyone else. Rather, aid is sought from Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He); because He is the One who possesses everything, the Exalted. And there is no harm in seeking it from a living, capable person... A living, capable person: you say to him: "My brother! Help me with such-and-such," and he hears you, or by letter, or by telegram, or by telephone (by phone), you say to him: "Help me with such-and-such," and he is capable, "Lend me such-and-such." This is not a problem. These are ordinary matters and tangible causes, and there is no blame in them. But you come to the dead and say: "O Master al-Badawi! Heal my sick one, or return my missing one, or aid, aid," or "O Master al-Husayn," or "O Master, O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)," or "O Master Ibn 'Arabi," or "O Shaykh 'Abd al-Qadir," or the like of these. This is major shirk, and it is not permissible. So one must be alert. It is obligatory for every Muslim to be alert to this matter, and it is obligatory for the scholars, may Allah guide them, to advise the people and teach them. Allah the Exalted says: [Al-Jinn: 18]. And He (Glorified and Exalted is He) says: [Fatir: 13-14], the Exalted. (Khabir) So He named their supplication shirk. And likewise He says, the Exalted: [Al-Mu'minun: 117]. So He named the supplication to other than Allah disbelief and shirk. So one must be alert to this matter in which many of the common people and the ignorant have fallen. It is obligatory for the people of knowledge and the students of knowledge to advise for Allah and His servants, and to teach these ignorant people so that they do not occupy themselves with calling upon the graves and their inhabitants. Rather, they should call upon Allah, and call upon Allah alone, the Exalted, and seek His aid in their needs. As for the living, present, capable person, there is no harm. The living, capable person, from your brother or your relative or your friend, you say: "Lend me such-and-such, help me with such-and-such," there is no harm, a living person who hears your words, or by telephone, by phone, or by telegram, or by telex, or by letter, you ask him for something and he is capable, there is no harm. This is not from the acts of worship. These are ordinary tangible matters. And the Companions used to ask the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in his life; they used to ask him to intercede for them and to help them with such-and-such, there is no harm in this in his life (peace and blessings be upon him). But after death, he is not asked, nor is anyone else asked after death.
And likewise on the Day of Resurrection, when Allah resurrects him, the people ask him on the Day of Resurrection to intercede for them, there is no harm; because he is a living person present before them. But after Allah has taken his soul and before the Day of Resurrection, this is not called upon, nor is aid sought from him, nor is slaughtered for him, nor is a vow made for him. Rather, this is from shirk. And likewise others, like al-Khidr, or Nuh, or Musa, or 'Isa; they are not called upon with Allah, nor is aid sought from them, nor are vows made for them, nor is slaughtered for them. And likewise al-Badawi, and likewise al-Husayn, and likewise Zaynab and Nafisa and others whom the ignorant worship. And likewise Shaykh 'Abd al-Qadir, and likewise Abu Hanifa, and likewise others. All of these and others, no one has the right to call upon them other than Allah, and he has no right to seek aid from them. Just as it is not permissible to call upon the idols that the ignorant worship, or the jinn, or the stars, or the trees and stones; all of this is not permissible. Worship is the right of Allah alone. He says, the Exalted: [Al-Isra: 23], [Al-Fatihah: 5], [Al-Jinn: 18], [Yunus: 106] meaning: the polytheists. And the verses in this meaning are many. And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: And "al-Nad" is the like and the equivalent, meaning: he calls upon a dead person or an idol or a tree or a stone with Allah, saying: "Aid me," or "Aid, aid," or "Heal my sick one," or "Return my missing one," or the like of these supplications. All of this is from major shirk. All of it is from what Allah and His Messenger have forbidden. So it is obligatory for the people of knowledge and the students of knowledge and everyone who has insight to teach the people and warn them from this shirk in every city and in every place and in every time. This is the duty of the Muslims. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: So advice is for Allah and for all His servants. And likewise the Lord (Glorified and Exalted is He) says: [An-Nahl: 125]. And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Sahih Muslim 1893a And when he (peace and blessings be upon him) sent 'Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) to Khaybar to call the Jews to enter Islam, he said to him, peace and blessings be upon him: Sahih al-Bukhari 3701 And the meaning is better than the world and what is on it. So that indicates the obligation of advising one another and calling to Allah and making clear the right of Allah to His servants, warning them from shirk, so that the people are upon clarity and upon insight. May Allah grant everyone success and guidance. Yes.

Answer: This dream and its like are from Shaytan. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said in the authentic hadith:
The good vision is from Allah, and the dream is from Shaytan. So if any of you sees something he dislikes, let him spit to his left three times, and let him seek refuge in Allah from Shaytan and from the evil of what he saw, three times. Then let him turn over to his other side, and it will not harm him, and let him not tell anyone about it.
Slaughter for Allah is an act of worship at any time.
