The Ruling on Consulting Fortune-Tellers and Sorcerers

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
As we anticipated in the previous episode, Shaykh 'Abd al-'Aziz, there are a number of listeners who will ask about these fortune-tellers and false prophets. This is listener Idris Muhammad Fadl al-Mawla, who is also asking about this topic. It seems that the issue exists even in Sudan, as they attach themselves to them, especially those who have been afflicted with relatives who are ill or have lost some of their money, or something similar. He requests guidance. May Allah reward you with good. And our brother's question on this topic took up nearly a page?

Answer:
We have previously warned about this, and it is not permissible for any Muslim to consult fortune-tellers, astrologers, diviners, or sorcerers who claim knowledge of the unseen or are known for things that indicate such. So, whoever is accused of this or is known for it should not be consulted nor believed. Rather, one should seek out people of good, knowledge, and faith to recite for the sick person, blow on the sick person, or consult a doctor known for skill and understanding about the illness. The known doctor, as for fortune-tellers, astrologers, palm readers, sorcerers, and diviners, everyone who claims something of the matters of the unseen and asserts that he knows this by such and such from them, all of this is reprehensible and one must beware of them.
And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said in the authentic hadith:
He who visits a diviner ('Arraf) and asks him about anything, his prayers extending to forty nights will not be accepted.من أتى عرافًا فسأله عن شيء لم تقبل له صلاة أربعين يومًا
Sahih Muslim 2230
, “forty nights” in ..... And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
or who goes to a fortuneteller and believes what he says, he has disbelieved in that which was revealed to Muhammad.من أتى كاهنًا فصدقه بما يقول فقد كفر بما أنزل على محمد
Sunan Ibn Majah 639Hasan (Darussalam)
(peace and blessings be upon him), so the matter is great. And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), when asked about the fortune-tellers, said:
Do not go to themلا تأتوهم
, and he said:
They are nothing.ليسوا بشيء
.
So the fortune-teller, the diviner, the palm reader, and the like claim knowledge of the unseen through matters and things by which they deceive people and delude them, such as casting stones or asking about the name of his mother or the name of so-and-so and so-and-so, or other questions by which they claim to know the unseen or know such and such of the causes of his illness, other than the known method of asking about the nature of the illness and the causes of the illness that afflicted him so that they may find a cure. Those who claim things external to that, from the direction of the stars, or from the direction of his mother's name, or from the direction of things that have no connection to the illness, all of this is among the signs that they are sorcerers and that they are fortune-tellers, and one must beware of them. Rather, one should resort to what is known for good, uprightness, and religion, and practice clear medicine that contains no doubt and nothing that suggests a claim of knowledge of the unseen, or serving the jinn, calling upon the jinn, or worshipping the jinn. We ask Allah for safety. Yes.

The presenter: May Allah reward you with good.
