Question:
The questioner : This is a message sent from Libya by the brothers Ali Hasan al-'Arifi and Salim Mukhtar al-'Arifi, or al-'Araifi. The two brothers have one question, which is: We heard a fatwa from His Eminence Shaykh 'Abd al-'Aziz ibn Baz in which he said: Raising the hands during supplication is a religious innovation, and this was not reported from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) nor from the Companions. We have found in some hadiths that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to raise his hands in supplication until the whiteness of his armpits was visible. What is the correct position, and is there evidence for this?
Answer:
The Shaykh : The one who conveyed this statement to the brothers was not correct in his generalization. The Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) raised his hands in many places, and raising the hands is among the causes of supplication being answered. He raised them in the prayer for rain until the whiteness of his armpits was visible, (peace and blessings be upon him). He supplicated in the prayer for rain, in the Friday sermon, and when he sought rain for the people in the desert, he raised his hands. He (peace and blessings be upon him) supplicated and raised his hands in many places when he supplicated for people or against people, and in the qunut as well.
The Shaykh : What I pointed out was raising the hands after the taslim from the obligatory prayer. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not do this in this specific place. When he would say the taslim from the Zuhr, or 'Asr, or Maghrib, or 'Isha', or Fajr, he would not raise his hands when he said the taslim from the obligatory prayer to supplicate. Rather, when he would say the taslim, he would say: Sunan Abi Dawud 1512Sahih (Al-Albani) facing the qiblah, then he would turn to the people and remember Allah, saying: Muwatta Malik 20:131, Sahih Muslim 594a, Sahih al-Bukhari 6615. He did not raise his hands in this position, nor did he supplicate in this position with his hands raised. This is what we clarified for the people.
The Shaykh : So what a believer should do when he hears a statement is to verify it as it should be, and to convey it as he heard it, and not to add to it, and not to lie to the people. The one who said this statement to them, or who claimed that they heard this statement from him, was mistaken. Raising the hands is a recommended practice in supplication, and among the causes of it being answered; except in the places where the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not raise them, such as after the prescribed prayers. One does not raise his hands during the tashahhud when supplicating before the taslim, nor after the taslim from the obligatory prayer, nor does he raise his hands between the two prostrations, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not raise his hands in this position. Likewise, in the Friday sermon, he did not raise his hands when he delivered the sermon to the people on Friday, or on the 'Eid, he did not raise his hands, (peace and blessings be upon him). He only raised them in the sermon for rain, (peace and blessings be upon him). And so in the other supplications, he would supplicate for people, or supplicate against them, and raise his hands, as in the qunut. When he supplicated against a group or for a group, he raised his hands, (peace and blessings be upon him).
The Shaykh : And so in the supplications that a person makes in his home, or in any place where he supplicates to Allah, or after the voluntary prayer, or at any time, raising the hands is among the causes of supplication being answered. In the hadith, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Mishkat al-Masabih 2244 So raising the hands is among the causes of supplication being answered.
The Shaykh : And in another hadith, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Indeed, Allah the Exalted is pure and does not accept except what is pure, and indeed, Allah commanded the believers with what He commanded the messengers, so He said: O you who believe, eat of the good things We have provided for you and be grateful to Allah [al-Baqarah: 172], and He said: O messengers, eat of the good things and do righteous deeds [al-Mu'minun: 51]. Then he mentioned the man who travels a long distance, disheveled and covered in dust, stretching his hands to the sky: O my Lord! O my Lord! And his food is forbidden, his drink is forbidden, his clothing is forbidden, and he is nourished with what is forbidden, so how will that be answered? It was narrated by Muslim in his Sahih.
The Shaykh : He (peace and blessings be upon him) clarified that raising the hands is among the causes of supplication being answered.Sahih Muslim 1015 So raising the hands is among the causes of supplication being answered, and persisting in supplication is among the causes of it being answered. But because he was consuming what is forbidden, this became among the causes of his supplication not being answered, due to his disobedience by consuming what is forbidden.
The Shaykh : So it is necessary for whoever listens to this program, or others of what we write in this position, or speak of, to be careful in the matter. It is not permissible for anyone to convey from me what he does not know, and I do not permit anyone to convey from me what he does not know until he hears my words on that, or sees a written statement from me that is established. Otherwise, the conveyance involves lying, and it involves truth. One should be careful in what the believer hears from people until he knows that it came from its owner with certainty. We ask Allah for success for everyone. Yes.

I seek forgiveness from Allah - three times -
O Allah, You are As-Salam, and from you is As-Salam. You are blessed, O One of Magnificence and Generosity."
There is no god but Allah, alone, without any partner. To Him belong the Kingdom and praise, and He has power over everything
There is no might or power except with Allah. There is no god but Allah and we do not worship but Him alone. To Him belong all bounties, to Him belongs all Grace, and to Him is worthy praise accorded. There is no god but Allah, to Whom we are sincere in devotion, even though the unbelievers should disapprove it.
O Allah! No-one can withhold what You give, and none can give what You withhold, and the fortune of a man of means is useless before You
The Shaykh : So what a believer should do when he hears a statement is to verify it as it should be, and to convey it as he heard it, and not to add to it, and not to lie to the people. The Shaykh : He (peace and blessings be upon him) clarified that raising the hands is among the causes of supplication being answered.
He lifts his hand towards the sky (and thus makes the supplication): "O Lord, O Lord,"
The Shaykh : So it is necessary for whoever listens to this program, or others of what we write in this position, or speak of, to be careful in the matter.
