Question:
From the people of al-Tuwain, a message was sent by one of the sisters from there, saying: Umm al-Muhandis, Umm al-Muhandis has six questions. She asks first and says: What is the ruling on having newspapers in the house, knowing that they contain many pictures? And if their presence in the house is forbidden and prevents the angels from entering, does crossing out the picture with a pen permit its presence in the house?
Answer:
Newspapers and books that contain pictures are not of the same kind as pictures hung on walls or displayed in a place; rather, they have a different ruling. If they are covered, or if the books are bound and the picture is inside, then there is no displayed picture. However, as a precaution, the head should be crossed out, meaning: the head should be erased and something like ink or other material placed on it until it disappears, until the head is gone and the rest of the picture remains in the magazine, newspaper, or book. This is safer for the Muslim and further from the risk of the angels not entering.
Likewise, the picture in the carpet that is spread on the floor, or in the cushions, does not prevent the angels from entering. This is based on what is established from him (peace and blessings be upon him) that when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) disapproved of the curtain with pictures that Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) had, he made it into cushions on which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would recline. It is also established from him (peace and blessings be upon him): "That he once made an appointment with Jibril to come to him, but Jibril was late for the appointment. When he came, the Prophet asked him about it. He said: 'There was a statue in the house, and there was a curtain with pictures, and there was a dog.' Then Jibril said to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): 'Order the dog to be taken out, and the statue to have its head cut off so that it becomes like a tree, and the curtain to be made into two low cushions to sit on.' The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did so, and Jibril entered. They found the dog was a puppy under a bed of theirs, which one of the young boys, al-Hasan or al-Husayn, had brought in."
This indicates that a picture in a cushion, carpet, or the like does not prevent the angels from entering. Similarly, the picture in a book is not respected, nor is it hung like a curtain hung on a door; rather, it is covered by the binding of the book and the binding of the newspaper, and the picture is not displayed. However, at times it may be opened and appear when the book is opened and turned through, or when the newspaper is read. In this case, the believer should take precautions for his religion and erase the head of the picture. If he erases the head, that is sufficient based on the aforementioned hadith.
Merely drawing a line between the head and the body, which is called cutting the head, is not sufficient. The head must be completely erased and obliterated. By doing this, the ruling is removed. And Allah is the One to be asked for help. Yes.
