Is it permissible to supplicate to an attribute of Allah?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
What is the ruling on supplicating to an attribute of Allah?

Answer:
It is not permissible to supplicate to an attribute; rather, one seeks nearness to Allah through it. One says, "O Allah, I ask You by Your love, I seek refuge in Allah by His pleasure from His anger, and by His pardon from His punishment."
One seeks nearness to Allah through them, but one does not ask them directly. One does not say, "O Eye of Allah, do such and such for us," or "O Hand of Allah, provide for us," or "O Word of Allah, help us." No. One says, "O Allah, O Most Merciful, O Most Compassionate," asking by His name, (Exalted and Majestic is He). The attributes are not asked directly by the consensus of the Muslims, as the Shaykh al-Islam (may Allah have mercy on him) said. Rather, one seeks nearness to Allah through them and seeks refuge in them. One says, "O Allah, I seek refuge in Your pleasure from Your anger, and in Your pardon from Your punishment. By Your mercy I seek help, O my Lord," and the like.
