If supplicating to an attribute of Allah is disbelief, how do we understand supplications such as "I seek refuge in the might and power of Allah from the evil of what I find and fear" and "I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He has created"?

The questioner : Your Eminence, the Shaykh.

The Shaykh : Yes.

The questioner : If supplicating to an attribute of Allah, Mighty and Majestic,

The Shaykh : When what is it?

The questioner : If supplicating to an attribute of Allah.

The Shaykh : Supplication?

The questioner : Supplicating to an attribute of Allah is disbelief.

The Shaykh : Yes.

The questioner : So how do we understand the following supplications from the words of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), such as his saying:
I take refuge with the might of Allah and His power from the evil of what I feel. أعوذ بعزة الله وقدرته من شر ما أجد
Muwatta Malik 50:9
and his saying:
I take refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He created أعوذ بكلمات الله التامات من شر ما خلق
Sunan Abi Dawud 3898Sahih (Al-Albani)
?

The Shaykh : And his saying:
I seek refuge in Your pleasure from Your anger, and in Your pardon from Your punishment أعوذ برضاك من سخطك وبمعافاتك من عقوبتك
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 3493Sahih (Darussalam)
All of these are seeking refuge by an attribute of Allah, and the intended meaning is the One who possesses the attribute, because supplication is when you say: "O Power of Allah, forgive me" or "O Mercy of Allah, have mercy on me." This is what the Shaykh al-Islam said is disbelief by consensus.
Because if you say "O Mercy of Allah, have mercy on me" or "O Power of Allah, forgive me," it is as if you have made this attribute an independent thing from the One who possesses it, such that it forgives, has mercy, and enriches. But if you say "I seek refuge in the might of Allah," this is from the category of tawassul (seeking nearness to Allah through a means) by the might of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, to safety from this feared thing from which you sought refuge by the might. Likewise, "I seek refuge in Your pleasure from Your anger," and likewise his saying:
‘O Living, O Self-Sustaining Sustainer! In Your Mercy do I seek relief (Yā Ḥayyu yā Qayyūm, bi-raḥmatika astaghīth).’ يا حي يا قيوم برحمتك أستغيث
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 3524Hasan (Darussalam)
The meaning is not that a person calls for aid by mercy separated from Allah, but this is from the category of the means, from the category of tawassul (seeking nearness to Allah through a means) by the attributes of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, that are appropriate to the thing from which one seeks refuge or to the one being supplicated to. It is not supplication to an attribute. Supplication to an attribute is when you say: "O Mercy of Allah, have mercy on me," "O Power of Allah, give to me," and the like. Yes.
