Question:
I read in one of the books explaining the Nawawi Forty a statement that reads: “O Allah, I have been written among the wretched, so erase me and write me among the happy.” What is the authenticity of this supplication?
Answer:
This is narrated from Ibn Umar, but it has no basis in the authentic hadiths. Indeed, whoever has been written as wretched will die wretched, and whoever has been written as happy will die happy. Allah (Mighty and Majestic) grants success to the one written as happy through his deeds, and the one written as wretched is guided to deeds of evil. The Exalted said: [Al-Layl:10]. And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Sahih al-Bukhari 4948.

(4) Indeed, your efforts are diverse. (5) As for he who gives and fears Allah (6) And believes in the best [reward], (7) We will ease him toward ease. (8) But as for he who withholds and considers himself free of need (9) And denies the best [reward],
Those who are destined to be happy (in the Hereafter) will find it easy and pleasant to do the deeds characteristic of those destined to happiness, while those who are to be among the miserable (in the Hereafter), will find it easy to do the deeds characteristic of those destined to misery.
