Question:
The reason Imam Ahmad (may Allah have mercy on him) chose the opening supplication: “Subhanaka Allahumma wa bihamdika” to the end of it, even though this is a disconnected hadith as the hadith scholars said, and it is well known that Imam Ahmad left aside authentic hadiths regarding this?

Answer:
The hadith is disconnected via the route of 'Umar, but it came via another route; the disconnected one is via the route of 'Umar, but it came via the route of 'A'ishah, Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, and Abu Hurayrah.
It is a very concise supplication, pure in the remembrance of Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) . For this reason, those who recommended it recommended it because it is pure in the remembrance of Allah; it contains no supplication, it is all remembrance of Allah, and it is all for the sake of Allah. Also, because it is concise and people memorize it easily.
For this reason, Ahmad and others recommended it without denying the other opening supplications. It is a brief, concise opening supplication, and several hadiths have come regarding it. For this reason, a group of scholars recommended it for its brevity and because it is pure remembrance and the oneness of Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) . If one opens with something else, such as:
O Allah, purify me from sinsاللهم باعد بيني وبين خطاياي
Sunan Abi Dawud 781Sahih (Al-Albani)
Allahumma, rabba jibra'ila, wa mika'ilaاللهم رب جبرائيل وميكائيل..
Sunan an-Nasa'i 5519Hasan (Darussalam)
to the end of it, then all of it is good. The best is to open with this one sometimes, and this one sometimes, and this one sometimes, so that one combines the opening supplications.
And I ask Allah to guide everyone to what He is pleased with, and to guide us and you to beneficial knowledge and righteous deeds, and to accept from us all. May Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon his family and his Companions.
