Is zakah to be spent on building mosques?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
Is it permissible to spend zakah on building mosques, when Allah says:
for the cause of Allahوَفِي سَبِيلِ اللّهِ
[Surah al-Tawbah: 60]?

Answer:
It has been established that, according to the scholars, "in the cause of Allah" refers to the expeditions of those who strive in the cause of Allah. Therefore, it is not to be spent on mosques, nor on schools, according to the majority of the scholars.
The correct view among the scholars, which is akin to their consensus, is that it is not to be spent except in the eight categories, and that mosques and schools are not among them, and that "in the cause of Allah" means jihad, the mujahideen. Some of the later scholars held that it is permissible to spend it on charitable projects, but this is the weaker position; because it contradicts what the evidence indicates, and it contradicts what the scholars have followed in this regard.
