Question:
If it were for building mosques?

Answer:
No, mosques are not built from zakah. Mosques and schools are not built from zakah, but they are built with the help of people of good. As for zakah, it is distributed in what Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He) said:
Zakah expenditures are only for the poor and for the needy and for those employed to collect [zakah] and for bringing hearts together [for Islam] and for freeing captives [or slaves] and for those in debt and for the cause of Allah and for the [stranded] travelerإِنَّمَا الصَّدَقَاتُ لِلْفُقَرَاءِ وَالْمَسَاكِينِ وَالْعَامِلِينَ عَلَيْهَا وَالْمُؤَلَّفَةِ قُلُوبُهُمْ وَفِي الرِّقَابِ وَالْغَارِمِينَ وَفِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ وَابْنِ السَّبِيلِ
[Surah al-Tawbah: 60] And in the cause of Allah: these are the mujahideen (those striving in the path of Allah) according to the scholars.
