Ruling on Bringing a Disbeliever into the Arabian Peninsula
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
My honorable Shaykh, I wish to bring in a maid from abroad because my family has been suffering from illness for five years, and the household work tires them out. I ask you to clarify the ruling on bringing in a maid. May Allah guide you, your eminence?
Answer:
Whatever you can find to replace her is what you should do, as you have heard. You should strive hard to find something that makes you independent of that, such as her mother, or her maternal aunt who is with her, or her paternal aunt, or her daughter, or something similar; perhaps you can do without the maid. And if the work is light and you can do it yourself, then do so. Whatever you can do to do without the maid is better for you, and safer for your religion and your worldly affairs.
And if you are compelled to do so, let the maid be far from temptation, old in age, and not possessing any beauty that invites temptation, as much as possible. Do not be alone with her if she is with you; rather, let her be with your family, and do not be alone with her. It is not permissible for you to be alone with her. This is what is obligatory upon you in case of necessity.
Do not bring in a female disbeliever. It is not permissible to bring in female disbelievers ever. This peninsula, first of all, it is not permissible for a disbeliever to reside in it. Rather, it must remain an Islamic land, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered in expelling the disbelievers from it, and he recommended that. So it is a place for Muslims, and it is not permissible for disbelievers to remain in it, except for a temporary necessity for a need, such as one who comes to sell goods, to sell provisions, to sell necessities, and then returns to his country. Or one brought in for a need that the state considers important, so it brings him in for medicine, or engineering that is needed temporarily, and then he returns to his country, and they do without him. Just as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) brought in the Jews of Khaybar, when they were no longer needed, 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him and grant him satisfaction) expelled them and banished them.
So the conclusion: That it is not permissible to bring in female disbelievers; except for a temporary cause and necessity, and then they are removed. As for bringing them in to serve, there are many harms in that:
First: Their presence in the peninsula.
Second: That the presence of female disbelievers raises people in evil, corruption, and disbelief in Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He), and raises children in evil and corruption, and the people of the house imitate them in evil and corruption as well.
So it is not permissible to bring them in, nor to employ them ever. And likewise, it is not permissible to bring in workers here for work. Rather, Muslims should be brought in from various countries so that they can do without the disbelieving workers. The scholars have advised the state regarding this, and the state has promised that it will do what it can to reduce them, remove them, and replace them with Muslims. So we ask Allah to help them.
