has protected us in this land from shirk (associating partners with Allah), and from other forms of worshipping other than Allah, or seeking nearness to Allah through means other than Allah, such as the righteous awliya (close friends of Allah). But what about worshipping status, wealth, and positions? The Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) said, meaning:

Answer:
This is a great danger from which one must be cautious, for leadership and the love of wealth are very dangerous! Worshipping them is to be pleased for their sake and to be angry for their sake. This is a type of minor shirk (associating partners with Allah). One should be cautious of that.
A person’s love and hatred for the sake of this world is something from which one should be cautious. So, if he is given something, he is pleased, and if he is not given it, he is displeased. This is the state of many people; their loyalty is not for Allah, and their love is not for Allah, but rather they love for the sake of this world and hate for the sake of this world. This is a deficiency in faith and a weakness in faith. May Allah be our helper.
