Question:
I had a wedding feast, and there was a person who was not willing to stand up with us, so I swore an oath against him and said to him: "Stand up," and I said, "It is forbidden for me that you stand up." So I ask you, may Allah reward you, to advise us regarding this?
Answer:
It is not permissible for a person to forbid what Allah has made lawful, and say: "It is forbidden for me that you do such and such," or "It is forbidden for me that you do not do such and such," or "It is forbidden for me to eat from your food," or "your drink," or "your house," or "your clothing." No, Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He) rebuked His Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: [Al-Tahrim:1]. So people do not have the right to forbid what Allah has made lawful.
And if a person does this, he must repent, and he must pay the expiation for the oath, for Allah said: [Al-Tahrim:2]. So if he says: "It is forbidden for me to eat such and such," "It is forbidden for me to visit so-and-so," "It is forbidden for me to eat from his slaughtered animal," "It is forbidden for me to enter your house," this falls under the category of forbidding what Allah has made lawful, and its ruling is the ruling of an oath; so he must pay the expiation for an oath if he does what he forbade himself from doing.

O Prophet, why do you prohibit [yourself from] what Allah has made lawful for you, seeking the approval of your wives? And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.
And if a person does this, he must repent, and he must pay the expiation for the oath, for Allah said:
Allah has already ordained for you [Muslims] the dissolution of your oaths
