The Definitive Statement on the Zakah of Adornments

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
A message was received by the program from al-Khankiq in Najran, sent by one of the sisters from there, (F. N. 'A). Our sister actually followed up with another message regarding the first one, asking about a number of issues, among which is: the issue of zakah on adornments, if you would be so kind, O Shaykh?
Answer: Regarding adornments of gold and silver, the scholars differed: is there zakah on them or not? There are two well-known opinions, and the stronger of them is that there is zakah on adornments if they reach the nisab. If the gold reaches the nisab of gold, which is twenty mithqals, and the amount of that in Saudi gold currency is eleven and a half Saudi pounds, or three-sevenths of a pound, but the half is clearer, eleven and a half pounds. If you say eleven pounds and three-sevenths, that is correct, but the half is clearer for people, eleven and a half pounds, and the difference between three-sevenths and a half is a negligible amount. If the gold adornments reach this amount, eleven and a half pounds or more, then there is zakah on them according to the correct opinion, and it is one-quarter of a tenth, which is twenty-five out of every thousand, or two and a half out of a hundred. The amount of that in grams is ninety-two grams; the amount of that in the known gram is ninety-two. If the adornments reach this amount, zakah becomes obligatory. And so it is with silver: if a woman has silver adornments, she must pay zakah on them if they reach one hundred and forty mithqals, and the amount of that in the Saudi riyal is fifty-six Saudi riyals. This is the obligatory duty; because it is established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:
If any owner of gold or silver does not pay what is due on him, when the Day of Resurrection would come, plates of fire would be beaten out for him; these would then be heated in the fire of Hell and his sides, his forehead and his back would be cauterized with them.ما من صاحب ذهب ولا فضة لا يؤدي زكاتها، إلا إذا كان يوم القيامة صفحت له يوم القيامة صفائح من نار فيكوى بها جبينه وجنبه وظهره...
Sahih Muslim 987a
This hadith, and this encompasses adornments and non-adornments.
It is also established from him (peace and blessings be upon him):
That a woman came to him with two bracelets of gold on her daughter's hand—meaning: two gold bracelets—and he said: "Do you pay the zakah of this?" She said: "No." He said: "Would you like Allah to brand you with them on the Day of Resurrection with bracelets of fire?" So she threw them down and said: "They are for Allah and His Messenger."
.
It is also established:
That he (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked by Umm Salama about adornments she used to wear of gold: "Is this a treasure?" He said: "Whatever reaches the amount that requires zakah, and zakah is paid on it, is not a treasure."أنه ﷺ سألته أم سلمة عن حلي كانت تلبسها من الذهب أكنز هذا؟ فقال: ما بلغ أن يزكى فزكي فليس بكنز
This indicates that adornments are considered a treasure if they are not paid zakah on.
So it is obligatory for the woman to pay zakah on the adornments she has, meaning: of gold and silver, if they reach the nisab as mentioned above, and a lunar year has passed over them. Yes.
