What is the mother's obligation toward her son who does not pray?
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Our sister actually has another question, Your Eminence, and it seems to me that it is the fruit of this unsuccessful marriage, and there is no power or strength except with Allah. She says: She has a son who does not pray, and she has advised him and threatened him, but he did not care. He is sixteen years old. She says: She advises him, but he mocks her, and sometimes he prays and then returns saying that Satan whispers above his head, and she continues with such phrases, Your Eminence. She asks and says: I am seeking refuge in Allah, then in you, save me from what I am in and guide me to the right path. What is to be done for a widow who has no power or strength except with Allah? Then she seeks your help. And may Allah reward you with the best reward for her?
Answer: This son who is not consistent in the obligatory prayer must be advised and directed to good, and he must be admonished and reminded, and warned of the anger of Allah. Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said regarding the people of the Fire:[Al-Muddaththir 74:42] They said: We were not of those who used to pray [Al-Muddaththir: 42-43]. So abandoning the prayer is among the greatest causes of entering the Fire; because abandoning it is major shirk. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Sunan Ibn Majah 1079Sahih (Darussalam), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: . So the prayer has a great status, and it is the pillar of Islam, and it is the distinguishing factor between the Muslim and the disbeliever.
So it is obligatory for every Muslim man and woman who has reached puberty to perform the prayer, and he is commanded to do it before reaching puberty so that he becomes accustomed to it and practices it, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded us to order our children to pray when they reach seven years old and to beat them for it when they reach ten, and likewise for the girls. As for the one who has reached puberty, it is obligatory for him to pray, and if he delays in the prayer, it is obligatory to demand his repentance; if he repents, otherwise it is obligatory for the one in authority to kill him; because the prayer is of great importance, and it is the second pillar of the pillars of Islam. So you, O sister in Allah, must advise him and strive to direct him to good, and warn him of the consequences of his bad deed. If he persists, then disavow him and ask him to leave; tell him to leave you and stay away from you so that his matter does not harm you and so that the punishment does not befall you while he is with you.
So it is obligatory for him to submit to your command and to fear Allah , and to obey the command of His Lord, Exalted is He, and the command of His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) in performing the prayer. If he does not comply and persists in his stubbornness and disbelief, then it is obligatory for you to boycott him and dislike meeting him and to frown at him with dislike, and to order him to leave your house and not consider him your son, perhaps Allah will guide him after that. And with this, you must order those who have influence among your relatives, such as your father or your elder brother or his maternal uncles, to direct him and advise him and discipline him if they can, perhaps Allah will guide him through their means.
The presenter: O Allah, amen. Your Eminence, there is about two minutes left of the program, I hope you will be generous in providing psychological treatment for our sister, as I notice that she is in pain and regret, if you would be generous?
The Shaykh: We advise you, O sister in Allah! to be patient, for the matter is not up to you, the matter is up to Allah. Allah, Exalted is He, says: [Al-Baqarah: 272], and He says, Exalted is He, to His Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): [Al-Qasas: 56]. When he strove to guide his uncle Abu Talib, it did not succeed for him, so Allah, Exalted and Glorified is He, revealed to him His saying, Exalted is He: [Al-Qasas: 56]. In this is consolation, and in it is comfort for you and those like you. If your son refuses to be guided and does not agree, then you have in the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) the best example. If you have advised and directed and commanded, then the matter is up to Allah, Exalted and Glorified is He.

مَا سَلَكَكُمْ فِي سَقَرَ The covenant that distinguishes between us and them is prayer; so whoever leaves it, he has committed Kufr.
العهد الذي بيننا وبينهم الصلاة فمن تركها فقد كفرBetween a man and disbelief and shirk (associating partners with Allah) is the abandonment of prayer.
