Question:
The first message in this episode, Your Eminence the Shaykh, is a message sent to the program from al-Madinah al-Munawwarah. Its sender is our brother Saleh 'Abd al-Rahman al-Suwayyan. Our brother asks about a conference, saying that it was held in America, and that among the recommendations of this conference is warning about some products, as they contain pig fat. Among those products are soap, toothpaste, cheese, and the like. He requests guidance from Your Eminence the Shaykh: Do you have knowledge about this conference? Do you have knowledge about those products? He requests guidance for the people, if you permit?
Answer:
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon the Messenger of Allah, and upon his family and his Companions, and upon those who follow his guidance. As for what follows:
We have been directed questions regarding the products mentioned by the questioner and what happened in this conference. It was referred to the competent authorities here in the Kingdom, and it was mentioned that nothing of that has reached this Kingdom, and that nothing of that has been established against it.
What we have is that nothing of this has been established with us that is claimed to be from pig meat or pig fat. Not everyone who broadcasts or mentions it is to be relied upon; because many companies are hostile to one another and plot against one another.
It is obligatory that this not be accepted except from people of knowledge, trustworthiness, and reliability who have verified the truth and known the validity of what some people claim regarding the presence of pig fat or pig meat in anything, whether it is cheese, soap, or otherwise.
As for the claims of some companies, they are not to be relied upon; because they are either disbelieving companies or companies that are suspected. The original ruling is that the mentioned soap, cheese, and the like are lawful; this is the original ruling. And Allah, (Exalted and Majestic is He), says: [al-Baqarah: 168]. So the original ruling is that these things are lawful except by evidence indicating their prohibition; because Allah has permitted us the food of the People of the Book. So what comes to us from the People of the Book, the original ruling regarding it is lawfulness. They are the Jews and the Christians, until we know evidence of its prohibition or a known material thing indicating its prohibition. Yes.
