The questioner : Books of tafsir have discussed the figurative interpretation of some of these attributes. What do you advise a student of knowledge who wants to read tafsir?

The Shaykh : I advise him to avoid all books that contain distortion. Then, if he matures later and wishes to look into and see what some people have been afflicted with in terms of distortion, there is no blame on him.
As for at the beginning, I fear misguidance for him if he reads books that contain distortion, such as interpreting *istiwa'* as meaning *istawala* (seized),
And your Lord has come وجاء ربك
as meaning "the command of your Lord has come," and
Rather, both His hands are extended بل يداه مبسوطتان
[Al-Ma'idah 5:64]
as meaning "His blessings," and similar false distortions. A beginner cannot read this because he will be misguided and perish.
And we believe that Allah comes in His own person, because Allah attributed the action to Himself: "Your Lord has come." And we believe that He rose above His Throne in truth, and that He has two hands in reality. Allah Mighty and Majestic said:
They have not appraised Allah with true appraisal, while the earth entirely will be [within] His grip on the Day of Resurrection, and the heavens will be folded in His right hand وما قدروا الله حق قدره والأرض جميعا قبضته يوم القيامة والسماوات مطويات بيمينه
[Az-Zumar 39:67]
.
So the matter is clear, and praise be to Allah. The matter is like the sun at midday. But I say:
And he to whom Allah has not granted light - for him there is no light. ومن لم يجعل الله له نوراً فما له من نور
[An-Nur 24:40]
.
