What is the ruling on eating food when consoling the family of the deceased?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : What they call the days of condolence, or does it not benefit? The answer is that it does not benefit, even according to the stronger opinion. Why? Because this reciter is reciting for what? For money. He recites for money. And whoever takes a wage for his recitation, meaning money, then that is his share from his recitation, and there is no reward in his recitation. Moreover, taking this money is forbidden because this is a specific bodily act of worship.
Then I say to my brothers whom emotion drives to do deeds for their deceased: I say, follow the guidance of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). What is it? Do you know it, my brother? You do not know it.
The student: The saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
When a man dies, his deeds come to an end except for three things: Sadaqah Jariyah (ceaseless charity); a knowledge which is beneficial, or a virtuous descendant who prays for him (for the deceased).
Riyad as-Salihin 1383
.

The Shaykh : You did well. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said:
When a man dies, his deeds come to an end except for three things: Sadaqah Jariyah
Riyad as-Salihin 1383
meaning he places it
or knowledge (by which people) benefit, or a pious child, who prays for him
Sahih Muslim 1631
He did not say "or a righteous son who worships for him or does deeds for him," even though the context of the hadith is about deeds. And yet our Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) turned from deeds to supplication. So supplication is better. Persist with Allah (Mighty and Majestic) in supplication, asking Him to forgive your parents, your grandfathers and grandmothers, your aunts and uncles, and the like. This is better than giving charity on their behalf. Yes.

The questioner : May Allah reward you with good. This questioner, the honorable Shaykh, says: The ruling on eating the food of the family of the deceased when consoling them has been confusing to me and to many students of knowledge.

The Shaykh : The deceased when being consoled. The deceased when being consoled by them.

The questioner : When consoling his family, I mean.

The Shaykh : Yes, consoling the family of the deceased. The deceased is not consoled, okay.
First: It is not from the Sunnah for people to gather at the home of the family of the deceased and bring food to them and make it like a wedding feast, meaning a marriage celebration. This is not from the Sunnah. And what I love for our Muslim brothers is that they abandon these customs, because as long as they are not prescribed, and they involve wasting time and wasting money, and perhaps they are accompanied by wailing or lamentation, they should abandon them. And praise be to Allah, every living person will die. And the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had a son who died, and his name was Ibrahim. And he said at his death:
The heart grieves and the eye sheds tears, but we do not say except what pleases the Lord. And we are grieved by your separation, or he said: by the separation from you, O Ibrahim.
And he did not open the door for people to console him. And three of his daughters died during his lifetime, and he did not open his door for people to console him. The most that came regarding this is that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), when the news of the death of Ja'far (may Allah be pleased with him), Ja'far ibn Abi Talib, came, said:
Prepare food for the family of Ja’far, for there has come to them that which is keeping them busy
Sunan Ibn Majah 1610Hasan (Darussalam)
And this is from the category of compassion for them and serving them on that day when what grieved them had befallen them, and their souls were contracted, and they were unable to prepare food. And yet he did not gather with them, nor did he go to them, peace and blessings be upon him. So such matters: it is incumbent upon us to present customs to the evidences of the Shari'ah. If they approve them, then it is a praiseworthy custom; otherwise, the praiseworthy thing is to abandon them. Yes.

The questioner : May Allah reward you with good. The questioner says.

The Shaykh : Some scholars said that it is a religious innovation. Yes.
