Ruling on Giving Zakah to Relatives

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
Is it permissible to give zakah on wealth to relatives if they are in need, such as one’s father, for example?

Answer:
There is a distinction regarding relatives. If they are siblings, maternal uncles, paternal uncles, or paternal cousins, and they are poor, they may be given from the zakah. However, not your father and mother, nor your children. You give to your children, your father, and your mother from your wealth other than the zakah. Ibn al-Mundhir mentioned the consensus of the scholars on this.
So, your father, your mother, and your children, you give to them from other than the zakah. As for your brothers, if they are poor, and your sisters who are not with you and do not have husbands who provide for them, they may be given from the zakah. As for your maternal aunts, your paternal cousins, and your maternal cousins, all of them, if they are poor, may be given charity and kinship ties are maintained with them all.
