Question:
I am a man suffering from a nervous system disease. I visited a psychiatric hospital, and they prescribed me continuous treatment, three times a day. If I stop it, the disease becomes severe for me until I fall to the ground without consciousness. I want to fast, but I am afraid that if this treatment I take daily is cut off, this disease will return to me?
Answer:
Do not fast, may Allah reward you. Allah says: [al-Baqarah:185] As long as the situation is as you described, take the pills every day and do not fast. Ask the doctors who prescribed them. If, in their opinion and experience, this disease will persist, then feed a poor person for each day. It is sufficient to feed an elderly man or an elderly woman. Feed a poor person for each day: half a sa' of dates, or rice, which you give to the poor. One poor person, or more, at the beginning of the month, or in the middle, or at the end. You gather it and give it to some of the poor, and that is sufficient. However, if the doctors say that this is expected to end, if Allah wills, after two or three years, then you postpone it. If Allah grants you health, you make up the fasts.
Question: If they say that its cure is not expected, and then Allah grants him health?
Answer: In that case, he fasts anew.
Question: And if he fed a poor person for each day?
Answer: What has passed has passed; he owes nothing. He fasts anew for the future.
Question: All the Ramadans?
Answer: The future ones.
