Ruling on Fasting for a Patient with Kidney Failure

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
A woman undergoes dialysis, and because blood is drawn from her body, she does not fast for most of the days of Ramadan. Is she required to make up the missed days? And if she is unable to do so, what is your opinion, Your Eminence?

Question:
If the doctors determine that she is unable to fast, she should not fast; rather, the fasting is postponed until she is able, and then she makes it up. If the trustworthy doctors determine that fasting is absolutely harmful to her, and that her body cannot bear it due to her need for dialysis and the absence of a kidney functioning to sustain her condition—even if she has a kidney, she is in need of not fasting—then she does not fast. She feeds a poor person for each day, like the old man and the old woman who are unable to fast, and like the person with a disease from which recovery is not expected. He feeds [the poor] and does not fast, giving half a sa' (a dry measure of about 3 kg) for each day of Ramadan. This is collected and given to some of the poor. However, as long as she hopes for recovery and the doctors say that recovery is expected for her and that she will be able to fast in the future, the obligation remains on her until she is able, and then she fasts.
As for if the doctors determine that she is unable, and that what is prescribed for her is to continue eating and drinking, because not drinking is harmful to her, then she breaks her fast permanently and feeds a poor person for each day, like the old man and the old woman who are unable to fast due to their advanced age.
