The ruling on fasting on behalf of a person suffering from a chronic illness

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question: My friend’s father is an elderly man who prays consistently, but six years ago he stopped fasting and stuck to prayer only because he was afflicted with a chronic heart disease. Can his daughters fast on his behalf?

Answer: As long as he is alive and unable to fast, with doctors certifying that he is unable and that this illness is not expected to end, he must feed one poor person for each day, just as an elderly man or an elderly woman who is unable to fast must feed one poor person for each day: half a sa' (a dry measure of about 3 kg) of dates or other staple food of the country. Likewise, a patient whose recovery is not expected is not fasted for unless he dies without having fasted. In that case, they have the choice: if they fast for him, they are doing good, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
'A'isha (Allah be pleased with her) reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: If anyone dies in a state (that he had to complete) some fasts, his heir must fast on his behalf.من مات وعليه صيام صام عنه وليه
Sahih Muslim 1147
And if they feed, that is sufficient.
