Rulings concerning a woman whose husband has died

Question: ........؟

Answer:
She should remain in her home if it is suitable for her to stay there, provided it is possible. However, if it is not possible, and she has hired someone, but her family refuses, or the house is in ruins, or she has no one there to keep her company and she fears for her safety, she may go to her family's house or to whoever she wishes. But if it is feasible for her to remain in the house of the man whose wife she was, and she was living there, then this is obligatory based on this hadith, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Zainab bint Ka'b bin Ujrah narrated that: Al-Furay'ah bint Malik bin Sinan - the sister of the Abu Sa'eed Al-Khudri - informed her that she went to the Messenger of Allah to ask him if she could return to her family in Banu Khudrah. Her husband had gone out searching for his runaway slaves, and when he was in Turaf Al-Qadum he caught up with them and they killed him. She said: "So I asked the Messenger of Allah if I could return to my family since my husband had not left me a home that he owned nor any maintenance." She said: "So the Messenger of Allah said: 'Yes.' Then I left. When I was in the courtyard," or, "in the Masjid, the Messenger of Allah called me" or, "summoned for me to come back t him and he said: 'What did you say?'" She said: "So I repeated the store that I had mentioned to him about the case of my husband. He said: 'Stay in your house until what is written reaches its term.'" She said: "So I observed my Iddah there for four months and ten (days)." She said: "During the time of Uthman, he sent a message to me asking me about that, so I informed him. He followed it and judged accordingly."امكثي في بيتك حتى يمضي الكتاب..
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1204Sahih (Darussalam)
until the waiting period ends.
The second matter: she must avoid anything that beautifies her face, such as cosmetics, kohl, and the like.
The third.: She must avoid perfume. A woman in the waiting period does not use perfume except when she bathes after menstruation. She may take some of the costus... from incense, meaning there is no harm in using it when she is pure from menstruation. However, using agarwood at any time, or rose, or amber, is not allowed. She must avoid perfume until the waiting period ends, except when she is pure from menstruation. In that case, there is no harm in using some incense, such as costus... or similar incense that removes the smell of blood and what results from it.
Three things have passed: staying in the house, avoiding what beautifies her face and makes people desire her, such as kohl and facial cosmetics. The third: she must avoid perfume in all its forms.
The fourth: Beautiful, dyed clothes that draw attention to her, make her look beautiful to people, and make them desire to propose to her or look at her—she must avoid these. She should wear clothes that are not beautiful, whether black, which is not beautiful, or blue, which is not beautiful, or green, which is not beautiful, or red, which is not beautiful. The important thing is that she avoids beautiful clothes, and it is not restricted to black. It is not obligatory to wear black. It can be black, blue, green, red, or yellow, but the clothes must not be beautiful. This is because the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Do not wear a garment except a garment of...لا تلبس ثوبًا إلا ثوب ..
Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah 8:1091
because the garment... the scholars mentioned that it is a garment that is not beautiful, unlike dyed clothes... which are beautiful. Therefore, a woman in the waiting period must avoid these.
And the fifth: Jewelry in all its forms, such as necklaces, rings, bracelets, or other jewelry. She must avoid jewelry and not wear it. These are five matters that a woman in the waiting period must avoid, and these are the five things mentioned in the hadiths.
As for what some people impose, saying to her: "Do not speak on the telephone" or "Do not speak to anyone," this has no basis. She may speak to whoever she wishes, just as she did during his lifetime, speaking to whoever she wishes without any suspicion.
Similarly, it is permissible for her to work in her house for the needs of the house, such as milking her cow or sheep, sweeping her house, cooking her food, and walking on the roof at night. There is no harm in any of this. She may go out during the day for a need, to bring her bread and other necessities, if there is no one there to provide for her. If she needs a doctor, she may go to the doctor during the day if it is feasible and possible, because these are necessities that cannot be avoided, and there is no objection to her going out for a need.
This concludes the commentary on the blessed seminar held by the two Shaykhs, may Allah reward them with good. I ask Allah for all of us to be granted success, guidance, more beneficial knowledge, and righteous deeds. May Allah send prayers and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and his Companions.
