The Ruling on Praying at Home Without an Excuse

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
What is the ruling on one who prays in his home, while he is free of any valid legal excuse? What is obligatory upon him? Is his prayer valid, or is it not valid? Does he have to repeat it?

Answer:
The majority of scholars hold that it is valid, but he is sinful and must repent to Allah , if he did so without right; if he prayed without an excuse, they said that it is valid based on the evidence they mentioned, including the hadith
The prayer of a man in congregation is better than his prayer in his home by twenty-seven degreesصلاة الرجل في جماعة أفضل من صلاته في بيته بسبع وعشرين درجة
By twenty-five degreesبخمس وعشرين درجة
and in the other wording:
Prayer in congregation is better than the prayer of a man by himself by twenty-seven degrees.صلاة الجماعة تفضل صلاة الفذ بسبع وعشرين درجة
Muwatta Malik 8:1
So they said: This indicates its validity as a single prayer, but it is accompanied by sin due to the other evidence.
The point is that the majority hold that it is valid, but with sin. He must repent to Allah and not return to that. Some of them said: It is not valid, and he must repeat it, based on his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
Whoever hears the call for prayer and and does not come (to the mosque for prayer), his prayer will not be accepted from him, unless he has a (legitimate) excuse.من سمع النداء فلم يأت؛ فلا صلاة له إلا من عذر
Bulugh al-Maram 2:308
And this person has no excuse. If he repeats it as a precaution and to avoid the difference of opinion, that is good. But he should be cautious, indeed it is obligatory upon him to be cautious about lagging behind, and not to make it a habit. Rather, he should fear Allah, and beware of what Allah has forbidden for him, and beware of the characteristics of the hypocrites. He should hasten and rush to perform it in congregation so that he does not fall into the association of hypocrisy. We ask Allah for safety.
