Question:
One of the brothers asks and says: He has a mother, and there are others who support her and attend to her affairs, but she is always afraid for him. He wants to go out for jihad in the path of Allah, and she does not accept that. What is the ruling on this?
Answer:
His jihad in serving her is better, if he has a mother who wants him to stay with her. Jihad in serving her is better. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered some people, when they wanted to go out for jihad, to stay with their mother. He ordered him to strive in her righteousness, maintaining ties with her, and doing good to her. Another man came wanting to go out for jihad, and he said to him: He said: Yes. He said: , and in another narration: .
So if he has a mother, let him stay with her, and not go out for jihad until she gives him permission. And if he has two parents, he must have their permission for that. Otherwise, his righteousness toward them and doing good to them is greater than his going out for jihad. In the authentic hadith, when he was asked which deed is best, he said: It was said: Then what? He said: It was said: Then what? He said: Sunan Abi Dawud 2486Hasan (Al-Albani) So he placed jihad after righteousness to the parents. Thus, righteousness to them is obligatory and a duty, and jihad may be obligatory, and it may be recommended.
