How to be just among children in gifts and maintenance

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
It is well known that being just among children in gifts is obligatory, but one of them may need what the other does not. The older child needs more expenses than the younger, and a daughter may need some gold. So how is justice achieved among them?

Answer:
The gift that involves justice is the extra grant beyond maintenance. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Be afraid of Allah, and be just to your children.اتقوا الله، واعدلوا بين أولادكم
Sahih al-Bukhari 2587
meaning in the extra gifts. As for spending on them, each is provided for according to his need. The older child has maintenance, the infant has maintenance, and the one in between has maintenance. So they are not equal. This is obligatory maintenance; they are provided for according to their needs. The older child needs clothes different from the younger’s, and he needs to get married if he has no money, so he is married off. He needs housing, and the younger child’s need is less than that. So each of the children is given his need according to his circumstances. There is no… adjustment. The adjustment in this is that he is given his need; that is the adjustment.
As for the extra gifts beyond maintenance, this is where the adjustment lies. One person is not singled out for something. He gives this one… and this is what he gives him. He gives this one a car, and he does not give this one a car. No, he makes them equal. But in their maintenance, in clothes, food, drink, travel, and the like, each has his share according to his need.
