Question:
A man gave money to another without stipulating that the money be returned with an increase, but the debtor, of his own accord, returned the amount along with an extra thousand riyals, willingly. Is this considered riba?
Answer:
If the amount is returned without a stipulation and without any collusion regarding the increase, there is no harm. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Sunan Abi Dawud 3346Sahih (Al-Albani) The Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) used to give more than what he took—(peace and blessings be upon him)—and he said: Sunan Abi Dawud 3346Sahih (Al-Albani) So if someone borrows a hundred and returns a hundred and fifty, or two hundred, as a favor and as a reward, there is no harm. Or if he borrows fifty sa' of wheat and returns a hundred, or less, or more, there is no harm. It is reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) borrowed thirty and returned sixty, and borrowed forty and returned eighty.
