The Ruling on Reading Books That Address the Problems of the Age

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
What is your opinion on reading books that address the problems of this age, the trials, and the contemporary schools of thought, including destructive ideologies such as nationalism, communism, and others? And what about books like those of Sayyid Qutb, Maududi, Muhammad Qutb, Yusuf al-'Uzma, and al-Nadwi?

Answer:
Well, if he reads them to benefit from the knowledge contained therein, reading whatever is accessible from them, but he does not neglect the books of the righteous predecessors. He should focus on the books of the righteous predecessors, such as the tafsir of Ibn Jarir, al-Baghawi, and Ibn Kathir, who transmit from the righteous predecessors, convey their knowledge, and pay attention to it. He should also benefit from the new books written by the scholars of knowledge, utilizing them to benefit from their knowledge, their methods, and their approaches in calling people to Allah. He should benefit from that, combining the new knowledge with the old knowledge.
