Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
Is it permissible for a man to sit with his paternal cousins, maternal cousins, and his uncles' and aunts' daughters, and to talk to them and for them to talk to him, in the presence of a mahram? And is it permissible for him to shake their hands? Please inform us, may Allah reward you with good.
Answer:
As for a man talking to his female relatives, such as his paternal or maternal cousins, in a manner of modesty and covering, greeting them and asking about their well-being with modesty, well-being, hijab, and without handshaking, there is nothing wrong with this.
As for sitting with them in a way that leads to corruption, with foul words, and with nudity and lack of hijab, this is an abomination and is not permissible. However, if he greets his brother's daughters, his maternal uncle's daughters, or his paternal uncle's daughters, or visits them and greets them without fitnah, but with hijab and modesty, and he is not alone with any of them, there is nothing wrong with this, from the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) to this day.
Is handshaking permissible?
Answer: Handshaking is not permissible. One does not shake hands except with his mahrams, such as his sister or his aunt. As for shaking hands with non-mahram women, no, not even his maternal or paternal cousin; he does not shake her hand. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I do not shake hands with women."
And Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took the pledge of allegiance from the women: "His hand never touched a woman's hand; he only took their pledge by words."
What about elderly women?
Answer: Even if they are elderly, no. Every fallen thing has a picker-up; he does not shake her hand.
