The ruling on working in riba-based banks for one who is in dire necessity

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
I came to these medical lands more than five years ago, and I suffered and was extremely tired at first. My sponsor had no work for me that would relieve me of the hardship and need for money to sustain my life and provide for my family, including my parents and brothers. I searched for work and moved through more than four commercial institutions. Finally, I settled in one of the banks here in Riyadh. I exerted my utmost effort and was sincere in my work until I became an accountant in current accounts. I learned that this bank places most of its money in banks inside and outside the Kingdom with riba-based interest. There are also two customer accounts where we receive bank documents recording riba-based interest for their accounts on our side, from external banks. Allah the Exalted knows that I am in extreme distress over this matter, and I have had no peace of mind since I learned of it. I have married, brought my wife here, and Allah the Exalted has blessed me with two sons. I am a student of religious knowledge who loves jurisprudence in religion and attends scholarly gatherings. He explains that if he leaves this job, he will fall into hardship and difficulty, and his provision for his family, father, and mother will be delayed. His mind is preoccupied with this, and he awaits a fatwa from your eminence on this matter?

Answer:
Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He) has made lawful for His servants what brings them salvation and fulfills their needs, and He has forbidden what harms them. So a servant is not in dire necessity for what Allah has forbidden; rather, he must strive with his utmost effort to seek sustenance through lawful means. Working in banks is assisting them in sin and transgression, whether one is an accountant, a clerk, or otherwise. It is obligatory for the believer to beware of this and to stay away from banks, because Allah the Exalted says:
And cooperate in righteousness and piety, but do not cooperate in sin and aggression.
[Al-Ma'idah: 2]
So cooperating with banks, or with highway robbers, or with thieves, or with deceivers, or with those who take bribes, is all cooperation in sin and transgression, and it is not permissible. What you received before that—before you knew—is yours, and what came after you knew is not yours. Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He) says:
So whoever has received an admonition from his Lord and desists may have what is past, and his affair rests with Allah. But whoever returns to [dealing in interest or usury] - those are the companions of the Fire; they will abide eternally therein.
[Al-Baqarah: 275].
What you received previously before you knew is yours, but after you knew, you must leave this job and abandon this work, and you must dispose of what you received from the path of riba, while you are aware, in the direction of righteousness and good, such as charity to the poor and the needy, and others, until you rid yourself of this money that came to you without a legitimate right. It is authentic from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that he cursed the one who eats riba, the one who gives it, the one who writes it, and its two witnesses, and he said:
They are all the same.
.
So it is obligatory for the believer to beware of that
And whoever fears Allah - He will make for him a way outوَمَنْ يَتَّقِ اللَّهَ يَجْعَلْ لَهُ مَخْرَجًا
[At-Talaq: 2]
And whoever fears Allah - He will make for him of his matter ease.
[At-Talaq: 4] So if you fear Allah, Allah will make your affairs easy and provide for you from where you do not expect. So seek other jobs, even if the wage is small. If you are taking five thousand, or six thousand, or ten thousand monthly from the bank, you will find—Allah willing—permissible jobs with a livelihood that suffices you, and Allah will bless it for you, even if it is two thousand, or three, or four, or even much less than that.
You must seek the lawful, and Allah will compensate you. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said in the authentic hadith, when asked which earnings are the purest, he said:
A man’s work with his hand and every business transaction which is approved
Mishkat al-Masabih 2783
And he also said:
Nobody has ever eaten a better meal than that which one has earned by working with one's own hands. The Prophet (ﷺ) of Allah, David used to eat from the earnings of his manual labor.
Sahih al-Bukhari 2072
(peace and blessings be upon him).
