The Ruling on Shortening Prayer and Breaking the Fast for a Traveling Driver

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
Some drivers are constantly traveling. Is it permissible for them to shorten the prayer and break their fast in Ramadan?

Answer:
A traveler may shorten the prayer, even if he travels constantly. He may shorten it, and he may break his fast in Ramadan. However, as long as he is continuously traveling, it is more energetic for him and safer if he fasts with the people, so that fasting does not become burdensome for him later. When he reaches his home, it is obligatory for him to complete the prayer, praying four rak'ahs, and it is obligatory for him to fast if it is Ramadan.
Likewise, if he intends to stay for four days or more in a town where he resides, it is obligatory for him to complete the four rak'ahs and to fast if it is Ramadan. Otherwise, fasting is a dispensation. If he breaks his fast while traveling, he is like other people, or he prays two rak'ahs. Even if he is a car owner who travels constantly, as long as he is traveling, he may break his fast and shorten the prayer. But when he reaches his home, he completes the prayer and fasts in Ramadan. Likewise, if he intends to stay for a long period in any town, more than four days, he completes the prayer and fasts.
