Ruling on severing ties with a disobedient relative

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
I have a paternal brother who lives in a separate house, and I wish to visit him. However, when I sit with him, he starts talking about this and that, and he speaks ill of various family members. He is psychologically exhausted and attributes his exhaustion and illness to these people whom he mentions in a bad light. I am trying to get him to stay away from this path, but he insists on it. What is your opinion, may your excellence be respected? Should I leave him without visiting, or reduce the visits, or what should I do?

Answer:
Visit him and advise him, and help him with the matters of his worldly life and his religion to the extent of your ability. Do not sever ties with him, for this is the nature of people. Who is free from backbiting? Say, who is free from it? Most people amuse themselves with backbiting, saying so-and-so did this, so-and-so said that, so-and-so has such a flaw, and so-and-so has such a flaw. But you should advise him and say to him: Fear Allah, this is not permissible, my brother, and Allah has forbidden it. Allah says:
or backbite each otherوَلَا يَغْتَبْ بَعْضُكُمْ بَعْضًا
[Surah al-Hujurat: 12]. You are defending the honor of your brothers in their absence.
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
If a Muslim defends his brother’s honor in his absence, Allah will protect his face from the fire of Hell on the Day of Resurrection.من رد عن عرض أخيه في الغيب رد الله عن وجهه النار يوم القيامة
Bulugh al-Maram 16:92
Strive to defend the honor of people, and advise him with kind words and a good manner. Perhaps, if Allah wills, you will have an effect on him through repetition. You will have an effect on him, if Allah wills, like a rope that, by the repetition of its passing over a stone, affects the stone. The repetition of advice and kind words with him, with an open heart, kind words, and a good manner, will have an effect, if Allah wills, and you will have a great reward.
