A statement by Abu Qilabah regarding those who reject the Sunnah, and al-Dhahabi’s commentary on it.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The reciter: He said, “It was narrated from Abu Qilabah that he said: ‘If I tell a man about the Sunnah and he says, “Leave us alone with this and give us the Book of Allah,” then know that he is misguided.’”

The Shaykh: Allahu Akbar. The reciter: Al-Dhahabi then responds by saying, “I say: If I see the speaking innovator say, “Leave us alone with the Book and the ahad reports and give us reason,” then know that he is Abu Jahl. And if I see the seeker of tawhid (the oneness of Allah) say, “Leave us alone with transmitted texts and reason and give us taste and spiritual ecstasy,” then know that it is Iblis who has appeared in the form of a human or has settled within him. If you are afraid of him, flee; otherwise, wrestle him, prostrate on his chest, recite the Verse of the Throne over him, and strangle him.”

The Shaykh: Allahu Akbar. May Allah have mercy on him.

The Shaykh: He does not dismiss his shaykh.

The questioner: Yes.

The Shaykh: He dismisses the shaykh of his shaykh.

The questioner: The shaykh of his shaykh.

The Shaykh : Yes.

The questioner: So, what is the difference between this? The explanation of his wording by Abu Hatim is that al-Dhahabi explained it.

The Shaykh: The explanation of his wording is that Abu Qilabah does not dismiss weak narrators.

The questioner: Ah.

The Shaykh: So al-Hasan al-Basri dismisses weak narrators, and he gave you an example of this with Zayd ibn Jad'an.

The questioner: Ah, okay. Does this mean that we follow the tadlis (concealment of a defect in a chain) of Abu Qilabah?

The Shaykh: As for him, it indicates this, but in reality, he does not accept something like this.
