What is the ruling on what is hung in houses or elsewhere, such as a blue bead, a horseshoe, a sandal, or other things, on the claim that it wards off the evil eye or brings sustenance and good luck?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : Regarding what is hung in houses, like a horseshoe, a horse's head, or a blue bead, it is said that it brings good luck, meaning?

The Shaykh : Excuse me, what is said?

The questioner : That it wards off, for example, the evil eye.

The Shaykh : It repels the evil eye, meaning.

The questioner : It repels the evil eye, yes, or it brings sustenance, meaning. So what is the ruling on this in Islam, first?

The Shaykh : First, I want to understand completely what you said: it brings sustenance?

The questioner : Meaning it brings sustenance, for example.

The Shaykh : This is new, this.

The questioner : Or ... .

The Shaykh : Yes, yes, there is no doubt that this is one of the means of shirk (associating partners with Allah) that Islam fights with extreme severity. It was mentioned in the hadith:
Whoever hangs up an amulet, Allah will not complete his affair. مَن تعلَّقَ تميمةً فلا أتَمَّ اللهُ أمرَه
. And among the wonders is the spread of such misguidance among Muslims, for whom the greatest, indeed the greatest, of what their religion brought is tawhid (the oneness of Allah). And part of perfecting tawhid is fighting all means of shirk and idolatry. And among the most amazing of these means is that a sane person believes in the benefit of an inanimate object, while Allah (Mighty and Majestic) has preferred man over many of those He created, as mentioned in the Noble Qur'an. Yet this person degrades himself to believing in the benefit of an inanimate thing that possesses neither harm nor benefit for itself.
And if Allah (Mighty and Majestic) has criticized the polytheists for seeking aid from their allies and righteous ones, calling upon those who neither benefit nor harm them, then it is all the more fitting that Allah (Mighty and Majestic) should criticize and disapprove of all people, and especially the Muslim monotheists, for relying on an inanimate object like beads, or a sandal, or this horseshoe. And the height of foolishness and superstition is that to ward off the evil eye, a new sandal is not suitable, but rather the older it is, the better it repels the evil eye. This is the limit of foolishness. Therefore, the Wise Lawgiver has made seeking aid from such things to be shirk, about which Allah (Mighty and Majestic) said, instructing the Ummah of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) through his person when He addressed him with His saying:
if you should associate [anything] with Allah, your work would surely become worthless لَئِنْ أَشْرَكْتَ لَيَحْبَطَنَّ عَمَلُكَ
[Az-Zumar 39:65]
, and He said regarding the polytheists:
And We will regard what they have done of deeds and make them as dust dispersed. وَقَدِمْنَا إِلَى مَا عَمِلُوا مِنْ عَمَلٍ فَجَعَلْنَاهُ هَبَاءً مَنْثُورًا
[Al-Furqan 25:23]
. From the spread of such means of shirk in the Muslim Ummah, a person takes a great lesson and warning, and a sad indication that the scholars of the Muslims are not fulfilling the duty of education and awareness. Otherwise, if they had fulfilled the duty of awareness and education, this means of shirk would not be spreading in cars and apartments. I once entered a pharmacy in Damascus and stood wanting to buy medicine, and directly in front of me, on a wall like this clean wall, a sandal was mounted, a sandal placed there. I immediately understood that it was placed to ward off the evil eye. A pharmacist is supposed to be cultured and aware, and yet he carries this superstition in his mind. We spoke with him for a long time and explained to him that this is neither a Sharia means nor a natural cosmic means, meaning its benefit has not been established from the experimental scientific aspect. The point is that the negligence of scholars in raising the awareness of Muslims opens the door for the spread of superstitions, shirk, and idolatry, including without doubt this blue bead, or the sandal of a horse, or the sandal of a child, or similar things. All of this is what Islam forbids completely, yes.
The student : ... .

The Shaykh : And may Allah protect you, if Allah wills. Come, in the name of Allah.
Do you allow us, Abu al-Abbas?
The student : A cup of coffee, Shaykh ... Welcome.
Another student: If it is ready, we will drink it, otherwise we will leave.
Another student: Shaykh, in this shoe that he put ... .
Another student: You know now they make shoes from clay, copper, and metals and hang them.

The Shaykh : Personal, meaning?
The student: Yes.

The Shaykh : No, by Allah, I do not know.
The student : Glass and copper, a Pakistani shoe ... and sometimes now where do they hang them in cars? Behind the car, because the car is moving, and the one looking at it is behind it, so that he does not envy, meaning.

The Shaykh: Allah is the Greatest!
The student : Advanced shirk.

The Shaykh : Yes?
The student : Advanced shirk.

The Shaykh : Advanced, yes. Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest.
And some Muslims say, my brother, you are still saying tawhid, tawhid, there is no shirk left. This is what some of the ignorant say.
The student : And shirk increases day after day.
Another student: Our Shaykh, there is also something, meaning, worse than that, that they now bring, our Shaykh, like the things that the Chinese and communists worship, which is Buddha, and Buddha is blue, this is a matter and more severe, not only shirk, statues of Buddha and things like this.

The Shaykh: Allah is the Greatest!
