Question:
At the beginning of this episode, we want to explain the saying of Allah the Exalted: (O you who believe, fear Allah and speak words that are just* [that] He may rectify your deeds and forgive you your sins, and whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger has truly achieved a great success)
Answer:
Answer: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may the blessings and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions. In these verses, Allah calls upon His believing servants, and Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) says: (O you who believe, fear Allah and speak words that are just). [Fear Allah] means that you should take a protective barrier between yourselves and the anger of Allah, which protects you from His punishment. This is achieved by doing righteous deeds and avoiding what is forbidden; this is the protection: performing what is obligatory and avoiding what is forbidden, in obedience to Allah and His Messenger, and seeking His reward (Glorified and Exalted is He). The fear of Allah is the command of Allah to the first and the last, as He said (Exalted and Majestic is He): (And We have certainly enjoined upon those who were given the Scripture before you and upon you to fear Allah). [And speak words that are just] means: rectify your speech, keep your tongues straight, and do not say forbidden words, such as associating partners with Allah (Mighty and Majestic), cursing, insulting, and other forbidden sayings. Most of these are sayings involving shirk (associating partners with Allah) and calling upon other than Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He). This is the just word, unlike the false word. There is no doubt that the tongue is very dangerous; if you do not guard it, it will destroy you. As he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “And what causes people to fall headlong into the Fire, or he said, on their faces, except the harvests of their tongues?” So the Muslim must beware of the slips of the tongue and the impulses of speech, and he must make his words just. Making words just means hitting the mark: saying what is correct and not saying what is wrong. Then He explained the reward for making words just in His saying: [And He will forgive you your sins]. [And speak words that are just] [And He will forgive you your sins]. This is the outcome of the just word. [And speak words that are just] [And He will forgive you your sins]. [And whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger has truly achieved a great success]. Among the things included in obeying Allah and His Messenger is making one’s speech just and avoiding error in speech, [avoiding] all forbidden speech, most of which is associating partners with Allah, cursing, insulting, and lying. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Who can guarantee for me what is between his two jaws, meaning the tongue, and what is between his two legs, I will guarantee for him Paradise.” The greatest things that throw people into the Fire are the mouth and the private parts. As the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to a person to guard his tongue: “Guard your tongue, O man, * Lest it bite you, for it is your serpent * In the graves, from the slain by their tongues * The peers used to fear meeting him.” So the Muslim must guard his tongue, make his speech just, and make his words pleasant. Pleasant speech has a pleasant outcome, and foul speech has a foul outcome. The most dangerous thing for a person is his tongue and what comes from it, such as backbiting, talebearing, cursing, insulting, lying, and other such things.
