The Ruling on Straightening the Rows
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q394: The questioner, Abd al-Rahman from Dammam, asks: I am asking about straightening the rows. Some imams do not care about reminding people to straighten the rows, and some are slanted. What is the ruling on the slanting of the rows during prayer?
A394: Slanting the rows is forbidden. It is also obligatory to close the rows tightly, so that the worshippers are next to one another with no gaps between them. The rows are straightened by no one advancing ahead of them or falling behind, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded all of this and practiced it. He would check on his Companions before entering into prayer. This is a matter of great importance, and it is not permissible for the imam to be lax in it.
