Giving charity precedence over the voluntary 'Umrah

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa number ( 19669 )
Q: Is it better for me, and more rewarding, during the blessed month of Ramadan to go to the Noble Makkah and stay there for a few days to perform 'Umrah, pray, and engage in other acts of worship, or should I donate the cost of that financially to charitable causes whose benefit extends to others? I am a resident of the city of Riyadh . May Allah protect and preserve you.
A : If you are able to combine the two matters mentioned in the question, that is better and more rewarding; because of the abundance of righteous deeds therein and drawing near to Allah through voluntary acts of obedience. However, if you are unable to combine the two, and you have already performed the obligatory Hajj and 'Umrah, and the need and distress of the poor become apparent to you, then you should give precedence to charity over the voluntary 'Umrah; because of the saying of Allah, the Exalted
and Glorified:
(11) But he has not broken through the difficult pass. (12) And what can make you know what is [breaking through] the difficult pass? (13) It is the freeing of a slave (14) Or feeding on a day of severe hunger (15) An orphan of near relationship (16) Or a needy person in miseryفَلا اقْتَحَمَ الْعَقَبَةَ (11) وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا الْعَقَبَةُ (12) فَكُّ رَقَبَةٍ (13) أَوْ إِطْعَامٌ فِي يَوْمٍ ذِي مَسْغَبَةٍ (14) يَتِيمًا ذَا مَقْرَبَةٍ (15) أَوْ مِسْكِينًا ذَا مَتْرَبَةٍ
[Al-Balad 90:11-16]
, and because the benefit of charity extends to others while you obtain great reward and abundant recompense, and because of the mutual support and cooperation among Muslims in charity, meeting the needs of the needy, and assisting them in matters of their religion and worldly life. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
