Q: Is it permissible to determine and identify the first days of the blessed month of Ramadan by a mathematical method through applying the interpretation of the noble verse number (25) of Surat al-Kahf or not?
A: The establishment of the month of Ramadan in the Shari'ah is not achieved except by sighting the crescent moon, or by completing the count of Sha'ban as thirty days, as it is established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:Mishkat al-Masabih 1970 , and as for using a mathematical method based on applying certain verses of the Qur'an and their numbers to determine and identify the first day of Ramadan or any other month, it is one of the invalid actions that diverts from understanding the Qur'an and reflecting on its meanings, and it is an exertion of effort and wasting of time in what is of no benefit, so it is obligatory for the Muslim to avoid it and to occupy himself with what benefits him in his religion, his livelihood, and his Hereafter.
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
