A1: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived in Madinah during his migration, he found the Jews fasting on the Day of 'Ashura. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked them about it, and they said: "This is the day on which Allah saved Musa and his people, and drowned Fir'awn and his people. So Musa fasted on it in gratitude to Allah, and we fast on it." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Sahih Muslim 1130c . And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.

We have more right, and we have a closer connection with Moses than you have; so Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) observed fast (on the day of 'Ashura), and gave orders that it should be observed.
