The sixth question of Fatwa No. ( 17575 )
Q6: A man died and he had ten days of fasting from Ramadan to make up , and he had recovered in Shawwal, but he was negligent in making up what he owed. So, should his guardian fast on his behalf, or is the guardian’s fasting restricted to vows and expiation only? And if the guardian wants to feed people instead of fasting, is that permissible for him? And what is the amount of feeding by the sa’? Please inform us, may Allah reward you.
A6: It is prescribed for his guardian to fast on his behalf the number of days he missed; because of the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):Sahih Muslim 1147 The hadith is general and covers fasting for Ramadan, fasting for a vow, and fasting for expiation, according to the correct view; because he was able to fast but did not do so and was negligent. If he did not fast, he should feed on his behalf one poor person for each day
from his estate. If the guardian feeds on his behalf from his own money, there is no blame on him. The amount of feeding is half a sa’ for each day of the staple food of the country, rice or otherwise, and its amount by weight is approximately one and a half kilograms. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
