Explanation of the Manner of Sniffing Water
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q26: The questioner says: I hope you will explain the manner of sniffing water and its ruling in wudu? What is the difference between it and blowing out the nose? Is it necessary for a person to draw the water deep into the nose? Or is it sufficient to put it in with his hand?
A26: Sniffing water (istishnaq) is drawing water into the nose with the breath, then blowing it out. Blowing out the nose (istinthaar) is expelling the water from the nose with the breath as well. Sniffing water is obligatory in wudu. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded rinsing the mouth and sniffing water, and he commanded to be thorough in both. He said: Therefore, it is not sufficient to place water in the lower part of the nose and then expel it; rather, it is necessary to reach it to the upper part of the nose, and that is by the thoroughness that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded.
