The Ruling on Rinsing the Mouth and Sniffing Water During Ablution for the Fasting Person

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The question: He also asks: Is it permissible for a person to sniff water during Ramadan? What is the manner of that sniffing, or does sniffing water break the fast?
The answer: Rinsing the mouth and sniffing water in Ramadan and in other times are obligatory according to the correct view. So it is obligatory for the Muslim to rinse his mouth and sniff water in Ramadan or in other times, in the ablution and in the full ritual bath. This is the obligatory act in the most correct of the opinions of the scholars. However, in Ramadan, he should not exaggerate. He should rinse his mouth without exaggeration so that the water does not go into his stomach, and he should sniff water without exaggeration, as in the authentic hadith:
and sniff water up into your nostrils, thoroughly, unless you are fasting.وبالغ في الاستنشاق إلا أن تكون صائماً
Sunan Ibn Majah 407Sahih (Darussalam)
If he is fasting, he should not exaggerate. He should sniff water two or three times, and the best is three times. And so it is with rinsing the mouth, but he should not exaggerate. He should not be severe in sniffing the water so that it does not go into his stomach. Yes.
