Explanation of the prescribed dhikr during wudu'

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q30: The questioner, L. M. S., says: I have made it a habit to say in my heart during wudu': "O Whiteness of Faces, whiten my face, my heart, and all my limbs in this world and the Hereafter. O Allah, make me one who receives my book in my right hand and not in my left hand. And when
I wash my feet: O Allah, make my foot firm on the Sirat when feet slip from the Sirat. Is this correct?

A30: This is not correct, nor is it prescribed. The supplications during the washing of the limbs of wudu' are a religious innovation. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
He who did any act for which there is no sanction from our behalf, that is to be rejected.من عمل عملاً ليس عليه أمرنا فهو رد
Sahih Muslim 1718b
So leave this; what is prescribed is the basmalah at the beginning of wudu'. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
the ablution of a person who does not mention the name of Allah is validلا وضوء لمن لم يذكر اسم الله عليه
Sunan Abi Dawud 102Sahih Maqtu' (Al-Albani)
And when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) finished his wudu', he would raise his gaze to the sky, point to the sky with his index finger, and say:
I testify that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah Alone, there are no partners for Him. And I testify that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger. O Allah! Make me among the repentant, and make me among those who purify themselves.أشهد أن لا إله إلا الله وحده لا شريك له، وأشهد أن محمدًا عبده ورسوله، اللهم اجعلني من التوابين واجعلني من المتطهرين
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 55Da'if (Darussalam)
The wisdom in this, and Allah knows best, is to combine the two purities: purity from ritual impurity by water, and purity from shirk (associating partners with Allah) through tawhid (the oneness of Allah) and the two testimonies of faith.
