The ruling on returning the soul of the deceased to him in his grave

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q355: The questioner says: I read a hadith to the effect that our minds are returned to us in our graves, for the purpose of reckoning and punishment. Is it the minds that are returned, or the souls?
A355: It is not the minds that are returned, but rather the souls are the ones that are returned. The soul of the deceased is returned to him in his grave, and he sits after his burial, after his companions have departed from him, and he hears the sound of their sandals. In the hadith, al-Bara' ibn 'Azib (may Allah be pleased with him) said:
We went out with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) for the funeral of a man from the Ansar. We reached the grave before it was prepared, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sat down, and we sat around him as if there were birds on our heads. He was holding a stick with which he was scratching the ground. Then he raised his head and said: "Seek refuge in Allah from the punishment of the grave," twice or three times. He said: "And indeed, he hears the sound of their sandals when they turn away, when it is said to him: 'O such a one, who is your Lord? What is your religion? And who is your Prophet?' He said: 'And two angels come to him, and they make him sit, and they say to him: 'Who is your Lord?' He says: 'My Lord is Allah.' They say to him: 'What is your religion?' He says: 'My religion is Islam.' They say to him: 'Who is this man who was sent among you?' He says: 'He is the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).' They say: 'And what makes you know that?' He says: 'I read the Book of Allah, and I believed in it, and I affirmed it.' In the addition in the hadith of Jarir, he said: 'That is the saying of Allah (Mighty and Majestic): "Allah confirms those who believe with the firm word in this life and in the Hereafter." He said: 'Then a caller calls from the sky: "My servant has spoken the truth, so spread for him from Paradise, and open for him a door to Paradise, and dress him from Paradise." He said: 'Then the spirit and fragrance of it come to him. He said: 'And it is opened for him as far as his sight extends. He said: 'And as for the disbeliever, he mentioned his death. He said: 'And his soul is returned to his body, and two angels come to him and make him sit, and they say to him: 'Who is your Lord?' He says: 'Ha, ha, ha, I do not know.' They say to him: 'What is your religion?' He says: 'Ha, ha, I do not know.' They say: 'Who is this man who was sent among you?' He says: 'Ha, ha, I do not know.' Then a caller calls from the sky: "He has lied, so spread for him from the Fire, and dress him from the Fire, and open for him a door to the Fire." He said: 'Then the heat and its poison come to him. He said: 'And his grave is tightened upon him until his ribs are crushed.' Then a blind, mute man is assigned to him, with an iron mallet. If it were to strike a mountain, it would turn it into dust. He said: 'Then he strikes him with it a blow that is heard by everything between the East and the West, except the two communities, and he turns into dust. He said: 'Then the soul is returned to him."
This is what happens to the deceased after his burial. We ask Allah for steadfastness, amen. Allah the Exalted said:
Allah keeps firm those who believe, with the firm word, in worldly life and in the Hereafter. And Allah sends astray the wrongdoers. And Allah does what He wills.
