What is the correct view regarding the deceased hearing in the grave?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
The deceased hearing in the grave, does he hear?

Answer:
Allah knows best. As for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he said:
Allah returns my soul to me and I respond to the greetingفإنها تُرد عليَّ روحي حتى أردَّ عليه السلام
Sunan Abi Dawud 2041Hasan (Al-Albani)
. As for the dead, there is the hadith narrated by Ibn 'Abd al-Barr:
No Muslim passes by the grave of one he knew in this world and greets him, except that Allah returns his soul to himما من مسلمٍ يمر على قبرٍ كان يعرفه في الدنيا ويُسلم عليه إلا ردَّ الله عليه روحه
. If this is authentic, it is specific to that case, if it is authentic. As for the hadith that he hears the striking of their sandals, that is specific to the time of his first burial, when his soul is returned to him so that he may answer the angels. He hears the striking of the sandals of those who turned away and departed from him from among those who accompanied him. This does not indicate that he hears constantly. These are matters of the unseen, and nothing is established from them except by evidence. These are matters of the unseen, and it is not permissible to establish anything from them except by established evidence. So the original ruling is that they do not hear. Allah the Exalted said:
Indeed, you will not make the dead hearإِنَّكَ لَا تُسْمِعُ الْمَوْتَى
[Surat al-Naml: 80], and He the Exalted said:
but you cannot make hear those in the graves.وَمَا أَنْتَ بِمُسْمِعٍ مَنْ فِي الْقُبُورِ
[Surat Fatir: 22]. So the original ruling is that they do not hear. When the deceased dies, his deeds are cut off except for what is indicated by evidence.
Q: The hadith of Abu Sa'id al-Khudri in "the two Sahihs" that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
When the funeral is ready and the men carry it on their shoulders, if the deceased was righteous it will say, 'Present me (hurriedly),' and if he was not righteous, it will say, 'Woe to it (me)! Where are they taking it (me)?'إذا وُضعت الجنازة فاحتملها الرجالُ على أعناقهم، فإن كانت صالحةً قالت: قدِّموني، وإن كانت غير صالحةٍ قالت: يا ويلها! أين يذهبون بها
Sahih al-Bukhari 1314

A: This is specific to this situation. This is by explicit text for this situation. It does not necessitate that she hears or speaks at all times. One should only stop at the texts, and not add to the texts.
