The Ruling on the Charity of the Living on Behalf of the Deceased

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q307: The questioner asks: Does the charity of the living on behalf of the deceased reach him in his grave, and does he know that it was given on his behalf?
A307: Regarding charity, evidence has come that it benefits the deceased, with the permission of Allah, if Allah accepts it from the living, especially if it is from his children. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
When a man dies, his deeds come to an end, except for three: A continuous charity, knowledge by which people derive benefit, pious son who prays for him.إذا مات الإنسان انقطع عمله إلاَّ من ثلاث: صدقة جارية، أو علم ينتفع به، أو ولد صالح يدعو له
Riyad as-Salihin 949
These matters reach the deceased if Allah accepts them from the deeds of the living. As for anything other than these, there is no evidence that it reaches him; as Allah the Exalted said:
And that there is not for man except that [good] for which he strivesوَأَنْ لَيْسَ لِلْإِنْسَانِ إِلاَّ مَا سَعَى
[An-Najm 53:39]
